 Visiting Mayan Ruins of:
- Chichen Itzá: Chichen Itzá was a Mayan city on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. Although it’s an important tourist attraction, Chichen Itzá also remains an active archaeological site. New discoveries are still being unearthed in the area, providing even more insight into the culture and accomplishments of the Mayan people, who ruled much of present-day Mexico and Central America prior to the arrival of European colonists. Chichen Itzá was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988 and, in 2007, it was voted in a global survey as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
- Uxmal: Was an important Maya city which flourished between the 6th and 10th centuries Ad. The city, following an extensive restoration programme, is the best preserved of all Maya sites, and it possesses some of the most outstanding examples of Terminal Classic architecture anywhere. Uxmal is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. First settled in the 6th century CE, or even earlier, it was between 850 and 925 Ad that Uxmal fully established itself as the capital of a collection of lesser cities in the eastern Puuc region. Along with other northern sites like Chichen Itzá, Uxmal survived the collapse which affected most other Maya cities 900 Ad. Indeed, the city embarked on a new round of monument building in the 9th and 10th centuries Ad and became by far the largest Puuc site.Â
- Tulúm: The magical ruins of Tulum are walled into the west and face the Caribbean Sea to the east. During its splendor, Tulum served as a major trading post for both neighboring city-states such as: Chichen Itzá, Cobá and Ek-Balam as well as to other communities and their entities to the south in what is now Central America. Thanks to its strategic location, Tulum proved to be one of the most powerful city-states during the 13th and 14th centuries, particularly following the fall of a rival city of Mayapan. In fact, when the Spanish first arrived there in 1518 they considered Tulum to be as large as Sevilla. However, shortly after the Spaniards began their occupation of Mexico, the ancient Mayas who once called this majestic walled site their home its already abandoned.
Visiting Colonial Cities of:
Izamal: Is known as the “Hill City” because it has in its urban zone, several archaeological vestiges located on the hill sides. After the conquest of Yucatan in the 16th century, the Spaniards demanded the foundation and construction of a city, which began upon the existing Mayan city. Due to the presence of two enormous structures, it was decided to build a small Christian temple on the greater pyramid and a great Franciscan convent upon the Acropolis. This convent received the name of San Antonio de Padua. And so was built what would be the greatest religious center of the Mayan converted to the Catholicism in the Yucatan Peninsula; like in pre-Hispanic time when worship was rendered to Itzamná, Izamal became the destiny of multiple peregrinations that – still today, arrive daily to celebrate patron saints in the diverse chapels of the site.
Mérida: The inland capital of Yucatan state, is a city that combines the splendor and opulence of colonial Mexico with fascinating Mesoamerican history and a flourishing contemporary art scene. Once the weekly home of many Spanish hacienda owners, the city is rich with 19th-century architecture and palatial mansions. The main passage through the city, El Paseo de Montejo, was fashioned after the Champs-Élysées in Paris and much of the city boasts a colonial European feel. Founded in the northern part of the Yucatan Peninsula on the remains of an ancient Mayan settlement known as Ichcaanziho (five hills), distinguished by its traditions, culture, human quality and above all by the beauty that surrounds its streets and each of the enclosures that combine the magic of the past with the modernity of the present, characteristics that exalt it and make it worthy of the title of very noble and very loyal city of Mérida.
Valladolid: A charming city that offers a more authentic Mexican experience, Once known as the Sultana of the East, Yucatán’s third-largest city is famed for its quiet streets and sun-splashed pastel walls. It’s also designated by the government as a Pueblo Mágico, or Magical Town,Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism reserves this prestigious title for places that offer tourists a magical experience due to their natural beauty, cultural heritage, historical significance, unique cuisine, and traditional arts and crafts and has a bit of everything .
Visit to Hacienda Sotuta de Peón: Built at the end of the 19th century in Tecoh, Yucatan. Join us on this interesting journey to the past while enjoying the highlights of this hacienda. Sotuta de Peón, Hacienda Viva , is the restoration project of a historic monument located in the heart of the old henequen area of the state of Yucatan, and gives you a real idea of what was once a fully operational Hacienda Henequenera, in the lavish style and true traditions of this period. Walking through Sotuta de Peón Hacienda, our visitors literally travel in time, transported on wooden platforms called “Truks” which are pulled by “mules” on rails of Decauville, as originally used by the workers. Here, you will be able to witness every step of the transformation process of Henequen (also called Green Gold in this region), from the plant to the fiber, and from the fiber to the finished product. It is also a good opportunity to see the old machinery that has been rescued from the ravages of time and rebuilt to its precise operative capacity and also a typical Mayan House in the hacienda.
